Protective shield :Magnetic field of Earth

Our planet's magnetic flux is believed to be generated at its heart, within the Earth's core.

Nobody has ever journeyed to the centre of the world, but by studying shockwaves from earthquakes, physicists are ready to compute its likely structure.

In the guts of the world may be a solid inner core, two thirds of the dimensions of the moon, made mainly of iron.

At 5,700 °C, this iron is as hot as the sun's surface, but the crushing pressure caused by gravity prevents it from becoming liquid.

Surrounding this is often the outer core, which consists of a 1,242 mile (2,000 km) thick layer of iron, nickel, and small quantities of other metals.

Due to the lower pressure than the inner core, the metal here is fluid.

Differences in temperature, pressure, and composition within the outer core cause convection currents within the molten metal as cool, dense matter sinks and warm matter rises.

The "Coriolis" force, formed by the Earth's spin, causes swirling whirlpools.

This flow of liquid iron generates electric currents that successively create magnetic fields.

Charged metals passing through these fields continue to make electric currents of their own, and then the cycle continues.

This self-sustaining loop is understood as the geo-dynamo.

Because of the spiralling caused by the Coriolis force, the individual magnetic fields are roughly aligned in the same direction, with their combined effect supplying one vast magnetic flux engulfing the earth.

How the Earth's magnetic field is protective

Earth's magnetic flux may be a layer of electrical charge that surrounds our planet.

The field protects life on our planet because it deflects charged particles fired from the sun, referred to as "solar wind".

Without this protective layer, these particles would likely strip away the ozonosphere, our only line of defence against harmful UV radiation.

Scientists believe the Earth's core is liable for creating its magnetic flux.

As molten iron within the Earth's outer core escapes, it creates convection currents.

These currents generate electric currents , create the magnetic flux during this natural action  is a "geo dynamo."
